Dear Henning,
December 17,2012
This is a letter that I have greatly looked forward to writing -the fulfillment of my recent promise
to send you photos of a child whose life was changed by your support. I've enclosed 'before
and after' photos of little Sherwin Josol- just look at his new (toothy) smile!
Sherwin is very lucky to have received surgery as a one-year-old, sparing him a childhood
full of shame in his native Philippines. When his loving parents first saw his cleft, they feared
their son was doomed to a life of endless ridicule and suffering. Something had to be done...
... but they were so poor, they knew they could never afford surgery for him. But they didn't
give up and they spoke with everybody they knew, searching for an answer. Eventually they
heard about St. Elizabeth's Hospital, a Smile Train partner, where Dr. Ramon Gonzalez has
been donating his time and talents to provide free cleft repair surgery - and new lives - to
children in need.
When the day of Sherwin's surgery came on October 4th, his parents waited anxiously
outside the operating room. But as you can see from the "after" photo I've included, no worry
was necessary - only the celebration of an exciting new life for their infant son!
Now Sherwin can count on a wonderful childhood - without ridicule, without isolation, and
without any lost opportunities due to his cleft. Think about all the smiles he will have at the
happy moments throughout his life - smiles that you made possible.
Sherwin** is just one of the shining lights in this Season of Smiles, but we estimate that there
are about one million children in developing countries who are living with unrepaired clefts.
These children are Just waiting for someone like you to to provide the surgery that can
change their lives.
Will YOU create a Season of Smiles for another child like Sherwin during the holiday season?
All the best,
Priscilla Ma,
Executive Director
P. S. We're working as hard as possible to create a Season of Smiles for more girls and
boys by providing free cleft repair surgery. Please visit www.SmileTrain.org to check on our
progress and to nelp us provide more smiles than ever during this season. "Many thanks for
your support that inspires and motivates us every day!
